This item was received from Sgt Drew Westrope of the Madison Police Department.  It is happening in the city of Madison, and so far it has not affected Edgewater.  However, we should all be alert for any unusual activity in our neighborhood and report it immediately.

Car Break-Ins

As you are probably aware, we have experienced a rash of vehicle break-ins since early June. The thieves seem to hit one subdivision at a time, but they’ll hit anywhere from 15 to 30 cars in a night. Please pass along to your neighbors to lock up their cars at night and not to leave anything valuable in them (wallets, purses, laptops, etc….). Most of the victim’s vehicles have been unlocked, but the ones with forced entry had something of value in plain sight. If anyone sees anything suspicious in the wee hours, call the P.D.  It’s better to check it out and have it be nothing than to ignore it and have it be something…..

The Edgewater Neighborhood Watch Program!

In our attempt to form a Neighborhood Community Watch Organization we want to reach out to the Edgewater Community (Our Neighbors & Friends) for your help and participation.

We would still like to enlist your thoughts and ideas on how to best serve our community and put together a reasonable and effective organization.

With that in mind, please read, think about, question and understand what we are asking of each of you.

Remember, this affects each of us and our neighbors, not to mention our properties!

We need Sub-division Captains and Co-Captains to represent each of the 11 sub-divisions. We currently have these positions in the following sub-divisions:

Compass Point Winfield Jobes, Debbie Fulmore

Dunhill Bill Smith

Fox Bend 11 Bob Loshuertos, Benjamin Hicks

Lost Tree Pointe Joe Roberts, Melissa McGrath

Remington Place 1 Bill Hastings

Steeplechase West Mike Stroop

Each Captain and/or Co-Captain has been asked to meet with a representative from each household in their designated sub-division to explain our mission and to answer and ask questions based on the handouts we have provided to them.

In the next few weeks we (Captains, Co-Captains and interested parties) will meet to discuss your thoughts and ideas. We will create a semi-formal document describing the perceived duties and responsibilities of each Neighborhood Watch member including:

    1. Displaying Neighborhood Watch Decal prominently

    2. Watching our property and our neighbors property

    3. Reporting strange and/or uncommon incidents

    4. Day Patrols – Night Patrols

    5. Sub-division watches

    6. Knowing when to call 911 and what information to provide

After we create said document we will have a community watch meeting inviting all interested persons to review and provide helpful comments and suggestions. When we are in agreement with our direction we will meet with both the Huntsville and Madison Police Representatives to receive their blessings, their decals, their signs and anything else that they are willing to offer or suggest before finalizing the Edgewater Community Neighborhood Watch (Group / Association) and performing those functions that we have detailed in the final document which will be made available to each household.

We would really appreciate your help and input.

In the coming weeks we will email and distribute flyers requesting your participation. We also hope to broadcast each milestone (agreed decision) reached via the Edgewater Web Page and Lake Life.

If you really feel this is something you’d really rather not be involved with, then I would urge you if nothing else to please take the time to at least meet with your sub-division captain once, then also please, at least get to know your neighbors on each side of you and across the street from you, you may never know if/ or when you might need them or they might need you.

Thanks,

Your Neighborhood Watch Association

SPECIAL SECURITY TIPS

  • When you are shopping and take your purchases to the car to put them in the trunk, get in the car and drive to the other side of the Mall.  The petty thieves sit in parking lots waiting to see people put things in their trunks.
  • Ladies" Do not drive to the Mall, get out and put your purse in the trunk, for the same reason.
  • Do not put the big cardboard boxes (60" Plasma TV) out on the curb any earlier than trash pickup morning.  Thief's cruise neighborhoods looking for the the things that move well in their market.
GREAT IDEA FOR THOSE WHO HAVE A CAR ALARM SYSTEM

Next time you come home for the night and you go to put your keys away, think of this: It's a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation. Start keeping your car keys next to your bed on the night stand when you go to bed at night. If you think someone is trying to get into your house, or if you hear a noise outside your house, just press the panic alarm on your car key chain. Test it! It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key fob chain. It works if you park in your driveway or garage! If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break in your house, odds are the burglar or rapist won't stick around......after a few seconds all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there and sure enough the criminal won't want that. Try yours to make sure it works before you rely on it. Just know that you must press the Alarm button again to turn it off. And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there.... This is something that should really be shared with everyone. Maybe it could save a life or prevent a crime.
